How to Translate Any Plugin with Loco Translate

In this guide, we’ll learn how to translate any plugin using Loco Translate, with a practical example from the Educare – Students & Result Management System plugin.
Our goal: Translate the subject “Academic Literacy” into French in the Educare plugin

Translation

Before we start, let’s see what is Loco Translate?

Loco Translate provides in-browser editing of WordPress translation files and integration with automatic translation services. It also provides Gettext/localization tools for developers, such as extracting strings and generating templates.

Now let’s see how we can achieve our goal!

Step 1: Add Your New Word to the Translation Template

Whenever you add a new subject or any custom text that needs translation, you must first include it in the Loco Translate template file.

  1. Go to WP Dashboard → Loco Translate → Plugins → Educare Pack.
  2. Click on Edit Template under the Educare plugin.
  3. Add your newly added subject (e.g., Academic Literacy) to the template.
  4. Click the Save button.

⚠️ Important Note: Do not click Sync or Revert while editing the main template file (educare.pot). Doing so will reset the file to default and remove all your custom translations. Please be careful!

Step 2: Add or Edit Your Language Translation

Now that your new word has been added to the Educare translation template, it’s time to translate it into your preferred language.

  1. Go back to WP Dashboard → Loco Translate → Plugins → Educare Pack.
  2. You’ll see a list of languages already added for translation.
If you don’t see your preferred language, click New Language (e.g., French).
Loco Translate Language List
  1. Click on your preferred language to open the translation editor.
  2. Click the Sync button at the top — this ensures your newly added word appears in the list.
  3. Use the Filter translations box to find your new subject (e.g., Academic Literacy).
Newly added items will appear in yellow colors.
  4. Enter your translated word (e.g., Littératie académique) and click Save.
